Solar Panel Prices

The average cost of solar panels in the UK varies depending on the size of the system, type of panels, and additional components like batteries and inverters. Here’s a general breakdown:

Average Costs to install solar panels

The cost to install solar panels for our home will depend on a variety of factors, such as the size and type of your roof. At Evolve, we will always discuss costs and the different options available to you. Not everyone, for example, has an electric vehicle at present so you may not wish to install an EV charger. Battery storage is recommended, but not essential, as excess power can simply be routed back to the National Grid. Most of our customers, however, will opt to install a battery storage unit to maximise the free energy that their solar panels produce for them.

The type of solar panel that is installed for you will also affect the cost. Monocrystalline panels are more efficient and typically used in systems needing higher output. Polycrystalline panels are slightly less efficient but more affordable according to the UK Builders’ Federation’s solar guide.

The overall size of your home and the amount of electricity that you usually use per year will also affect the solar panel energy system that you require. For a typical three-bedroom home, a 4.5 kW system is common. Whilst the panels alone cost in the region of £4,500, when you include the necessary inverter, beneficial batteries and the cost of installation, the total cost is likely to range between £9,000 and £10,200. (Figures taken from the UK Builders’ Federation). If your home is larger, a 12kW system may be needed, so costs rise to between £9,500 and £13,000.

Evolve have access to and information on various funding which can make going green with solar PV an appealing and cost-effective option, and in certain cases, it is possible to install a solar panel system for free.

Potential additional costs

Many people install solar panels to benefit from free or cheaper energy, protecting themselves from energy price rises. Whilst not essential, by installing batteries to store your excess energy, you can use this free energy rather than paying for electricity when your solar panels are not providing electricity directly – at night, for example. A battery system can cost upwards of £2,000 which will contribute significantly to the overall system cost, but offers substantial savings by storing the excess energy that you produce.

Similarly, for those customers wanting electric vehicle (EV) charging options, they will need to consider the cost of the unit as well as the additional installation costs.

Using our 30-second quote tool will give you an indication of costs or by talking to one of our experienced and accredited team members, you can get a full breakdown of costs and any funding available for your situation.

Savings and Incentives

Evolve have access to a number of funding options – some of which mean that your solar panel energy system can be installed for free. Whether you qualify for such funding or not, there are a number of initiatives making solar energy attractive.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme is a government-backed initiative that allows homeowners to sell excess energy back to the National Grid, providing additional income and increasing savings over time. The SEG payments are calculated using exported meter readings and the amounts will depend on the electricity company used as rates, contract length and other terms will vary.

The UK energy regulator, Ofgem, publish an annual list of electricity companies (known as SEG Licensees) which participate in the scheme.

The UK government, local government and energy providers offer various grants and reduced VAT on solar installations, making it more affordable for homeowners to switch to solar energy. By making it as attractive as possible for homeowners, the UK is more likely to reach its net zero targets and positively impact the environment.

When calculating the overall savings, it is important to consider numerous factors and the options available to you, both now and on an ongoing basis. Our quotation will include the potential return on investment and the length of time it will take to recoup your costs (if you don’t qualify for free installation). The savings that you make will depend on your current and likely future electricity usage; the positioning, and therefore, effectiveness of your solar panels; what time of day you use most electricity and what payment rate you will receive for any excess electricity that you sell to the National Grid.

Contact the Evolve team to find out which grants or funding that you might qualify for and to discuss the likely savings and return on investment that you will make from your particular situation.

Solar panel and battery storage FAQs

What is solar PV?

Photovoltaics (PV) is the conversion of light into electricity. Whilst the phrase solar PV indicates sunshine, solar panel cells don’t need direct sunlight to work. They can even create electricity on cloudy days, although not as much as they will on a sunny one. Each panel can generate between 400-450w of energy in strong sunlight

Why should I have solar PV?

Solar power is an excellent, sustainable way to create energy. The Energy Saving Trust states that a typical home solar panel system could save around one tonne of carbon per year which is the equivalent of driving 3,600 miles.

Another reason to install solar PV is because sunlight is free. Once you’ve paid for your initial installation, your electricity bills will reduce significantly. By storing excess electricity in a battery to use when solar electricity isn’t being produced, you may even find you don’t pay anything for your electricity. Some people even make money by selling their excess electricity back to the National Grid as part of the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme.

How long does solar PV take to install?

Following suitable structural checks, the actual installation of your system is likely to only take two or three days in total. The first day is often spent erecting scaffolding to ensure the team’s safety.

Most of the initial work is external, so there is minimal disruption. The inverter can either be installed inside or outside and will be installed near your main distribution point for electrical circuits. Any batteries and EV charger if you are having them fitted will then be installed and connected to the inverter.

Finally, the entire system will be tested.

How much money can solar PV save me on my heating bills?

According to the Energy Saving Trust (EST), it will depend on where you live in the UK as areas further south get more direct sunlight and whether you sign up for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments. The savings that you make will also depend on your current and likely future electricity usage and what time of day you use most electricity.

For a property in Aberystwyth, the EST estimate savings in the region of £500 per year. If you are home all day, they estimate £550 or £460 if you are out all day until 6pm. Figures are based on fuel prices as of July 2024 and assume you have signed up for SEG payments.

How much does solar PV Cost?

The cost to install solar panels for our home will depend on a variety of factors, such as the size and type of your roof. At Evolve, we will always discuss your requirements and outline all costs and the different options available to you.

Currently, prices start at £4,995 subject to survey. Please contact us to get your solar PV journey started.
