What are solar PV panels?
A solar PV panel consists of many cells that are made of a semi-conducting material, usually silicon. When light shines on the cells it creates a flow of electricity.
Solar panels work in most daylight conditions, even cloudy days, but the more direct sunlight that hits the panels, the better the generation will be that day. The panels will capture the sun’s energy as DC voltage, before the converter changes it into AC voltage which can be used in the home.
Typical solar PV systems are made up of around 10 panels but it depends on the size of your roof space, a typical system takes up 20m 2 of roof area. Most solar PV systems are considered a ‘permitted development’ so don’t generally require planning permission but some exceptions do exist; we can advise on that for you.

How does is work?
PV panels on your roof will capture the sun’s energy and convert it into DC voltage.
An inverter, connected to your consumer unit, will convert the DC voltage into AC voltage, so it can be used in the home.
Your generation meter will register how much your system is generating.
When you require electricity in the home (ie. an appliance is switched on), the inverter makes sure that solar electricity is used first.
If there is not quite enough solar energy available, more will be drawn from National Grid to top up. This is seamless.
If you have excess solar energy, it will be stored in the battery for use when needed.
Unused solar electricity will be fed back to National Grid under the government backed scheme Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

Battery storage or battery energy storage systems (BESS) are devices that allow surplus electricity to be stored and then used as and when you need it. Without battery storage you could waste a lot of electricity generated by your solar panels, simply because you’re not at home at the time it’s being generated, or your panels are using more than you need at the time it’s being generated.
Battery storage is especially important if you are out of the house during the day. That way when your house is empty during the day and there is little demand for electricity, you can rest assured that all the electricity being generated by your panels (during sunny, daylight hours) is being efficiently stored for usage when you return home and your electricity demand for the day is at its peak.
Without somewhere to store your generated energy, you could end up switching back to the National Grid, which will cost you money, more often than you need to. If you have battery storage you can use the energy stored during the daytime at night time when homes usually need it most.

How does is work?
There are numerous factors that impact how much a solar PV system will save on energy bills, such as the size of the system, its efficiency and at what time of day the household requires energy usage.
